WHY MELANIE'S CLASSES ARE UNIQUE
Because of her strong dance background, Melanie is skilled in noticing subtle differences in body movement and alignment.  She is quickly aware of what participants’ strengths, weaknesses, and needs are and can immediately correct alignment or alter a movement so that participants are always getting the most out of class. The value in Melanie’s classes is that she takes the time to teach class with detailed instruction, different from just giving class from the front of a crowded room.
"IS PILATES MAT WORK RIGHT
FOR ME?"

You are only as young as your spine is mobile.

Pilates is an ideal way to find mobility, strength and proper alignment of your spine.  If your spine is not mobile, your limbs are doing all of the work   Finding strength, suppleness and proper alignment of the spine decreases potential for injury throughout the body and allows greater freedom of movement.

Pilates mat work takes place on a mat on the floor in the sitting, table-top (all fours), supine (back down), prone (belly down) and side-lying positions.  The mat work begins with a spinal warm up and progresses through a wide variety of exercises in the above mentioned body positions.  Pilates mat work moves continuously from one exercise to the next.

You will leave class feeling more open in your joints, longer in your spine, stronger in your abdominals and calmer in your breath.

GROUP CLASSES

Whether you are new to Pilates or are very familiar with the Pilates movement vocabulary, you will benefit significantly from Melanie's instruction. Each movement is explained in a clear and efficient manner. Melanie's attention to detail and use of imagery help make the moves easy for a beginner and challenging for an advanced student. Melanie demonstrates variations on each Pilates movement so members of the class can work together while still participating at their own level.

There are no group classes being offered at this time.

PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

Private instruction is for those new to the Pilates movement vocabulary as well as those who are bored with routine health club Pilates classes and want to challenge themselves by learning more advanced movement vocabulary and moving at a quicker pace.   During each one-on-one session, Melanie will work with you to perfect the movements on the mat, helping you to get the most out of your workout. This individualized instruction benefits students of all skill levels and abilities.  One-on-one sessions take place in the comfort of your home or an alternate space can be arranged.  Typically private sessions last one hour.

WHICH IS RIGHT
FOR YOU?

Melanie recommends that participants take a minimum of three sessions of private, one-on-one instruction before taking a group class if they are completely unfamiliar with the Pilates movement vocabulary. This is not required in order to take the group classes, since the movement vocabulary is clearly explained during each group class session. However, in order to ensure that you are getting the most benefit from the moves and executing them in the safest way, initial private instruction is ideal.

BE PREPARED FOR CLASS
Equipment: Bring a Pilates/yoga mat or a large bath towel.
Energy: Participants can have a productive Pilates mat workout whether they come to class with tons of energy or very little energy. The movements are not as strenuous as an aerobic workout, and you remain relatively stationary, Pilates does not pose a great injury risk for tired bodies.
Eating: Melanie recommends that you do not eat before you come to class because Pilates engages your abdominals continuously. Practicing Pilates on a full stomach can make the movements difficult and uncomfortable.
Bathroom: Be sure to use the bathroom prior to your Pilates class because you'll be using your abdominal muscles continuously.
